Database Administrator required http://www.westwalesmason.com/default.asp?pid=222&nid=84 Provincial Database Administrator

The Province is looking to recruit a brother to maintain and administer the membership records. The person appointed will work under the guidance and control of the Provincial Grand Secretary. As with all Provincial posts there is no remuneration, but any expenses incurred will be re-imbursed.

The records of about 1650 members are currently maintained on a stand-alone Microsoft Access database. This database is old, and flat rather than relational, and is really at the end of its useful life. However, at the moment it does work. The records are also maintained on the UGLE Adelphi database, and it is this area which will be developed for future use. Adelphi is an Oracle database deployed on a Java platform, and maintenance is relatively straightforward. Data extraction and reporting is achieved using the Discoverer program supplied by UGLE.

Looking ahead, the Province wishes to move entirely to Adelphi, producing reports, correspondence and accounts from there.

The person appointed to this task will need to have a good knowledge of database management, an understanding of the Data Protection Act, and must be willing to travel to London for training at UGLE when the occasion demands it.

This appointment is open to any brother regardless of rank. Expressions of interest must be sent to the Provincial Grand Secretary at sec@westwalesmason.com . The form to be completed can be found here and must be submitted by 8th October 2010.

Medieaval Fayre http://www.westwalesmason.com/default.asp?pid=222&nid=82 By Bob Darkins     (To view pictures click “SLIDESHOW” or “INDiVIDUAL” photos)

On Saturday June 19th 2010 the Province of West Wales held a very successful Grand Charity Event on the United Counties Showground in Carmarthen. The Event in the theme of Medieaval Fayre was generously sponsored by CK Foodstores .and Castell Howell Foods, and the Medieaval Banquet in the evening was sponsored by Fedwen Tentage who provided the excellent Marquee in which we dined royally.

There was lots to see and do at the Fayre and it is estimated that some 2,000 people attended and enjoyed the spectacular display by the Knights of Arkley demonstrating their skills at Jousting and the fighting skills of Nobleman. Along with the excellent Falconry display by Roger James of Black Mountain Falconry based in Abergavenny showing the versatility of their Birds of Prey. The crowd were further entertained by the skilful bowmen of the Wolfshead Bowmen who interacted with members of the audience.

Outside of the main arena there was plenty to see – The Collegiate of Knight Templar gave really exciting demonstrations of knight Templar fighting skills and an educational commentary of their weapons and the way they lived. The Wolfshead Bowmen had an archery range where people went to have a go at using the Longbow. The Market area proved very interesting and successful with Lodges and traders providing many interesting items that were being sold or raffled along with games to be enjoyed a fitting ambience for all.

Around the main arena were fair ground facilities for young children to enjoy and a food corner with Catering facilities by Iona Marks with lots of seats and tables, where people could sit and talk whist refreshing themselves.  Also in attendance were Air Ambulance Wales and St John Ambulance Service.

The Provincial Grand Master used this occasion to make a presentation to Air Ambulance Wale with a Cheque in the amount of £4,000. The Provincial Grand Master also announced that it was hoped that a grant would soon be approved by the Grand Charity to the St John Inshore Lifeboat Service to purchase a new Lifeboat stationed at Ferryside

For the adults who desired a refreshing drink, a visit to the ‘Crimson Moon’ Tavern was the thing to do there you could sample various meads, wines and ales, with mine hosts Sue & Iain Sewell and their staff in period costume providing some medieaval entertainment. There you could rest yourself on the outdoor tables and be entertained by “Blast from the Past” the very talented duo team of Minstrels Chris Green & Jude Rees who not only played all day long interacting with children and adults alike but also entertained us at the Banquet with music and strong man act, alternately watch Gerry the wandering Minstrel playing his penny whistle or enjoy the spectacle of mischievous people being locked in the stocks and pilloried with wet sponges.

To keep us all safe and properly behaved the Knights Templar in regalia were in attendance adding a colourful addition to the proceedings, marshalling the event and arresting any mischievous people. We are indeed indebted to Colin Fielder and Harry Randal and all Knight Templar who assisted them for all their hard work, and of course to the Provincial Prior Right Eminent Knight Graham Gubb for allowing us to have the Knight Templar’s appear in regalia whist receiving people at the entrance, directing the car park, and marshalling the event.

The Phenomenal success of this event was due to the co-operation of all the Lodges in the Province and their members who bought tickets in advance and the many people who contributed as sponsors or helpers.

We have already mentioned the main sponsors above and now particularly thank those other sponsors who paid for Banners to be hung around the arena or who advertised their businesses in the programme of the day. Without their support and generosity it would have been extremely difficult to have produced a successful event such as we did. There were many others who helped with the running of the event and I thank them all sincerely. I must however particularly mention – Iain and Sue Sewell for all their help and guidance from the start, it was Iain’s encouragement that brought the idea to fruition. Also Gareth Owen & Daryl Jenkins who spent the whole day spit roasting the very large Pig donated by Hefn Jones and the Lamb donated by Keith Davies & Alun Evans and of course Ian Jenkins who donated the Venison.

I must also thank our Provincial Grand Master Eric Mock for his support and confidence in allowing me the opportunity to organise this large event which was the first of its kind in this Province which involved opening the event out to the general public. Also W.Bro Brian Hilling  - Chairman of the Festival Committee for whom this event was organised, he encouraged and guided and gave us the responsibility of our actions, I am confident we did not let him down.

Lastly my sincere thanks the organising committee:-

Alan Bevan - Printing, Michael Cross - Market Area & Stalls, Ryland James - Treasurer, Elfan Bell - Public Relations, Glynog Davies – Commentator, Randal Isaacs - Compare at Banquet, John Phillips- Publicity, Mike Davies, John Everett and CAD representatives - Ticket Sales.

THANK YOU ALL MOST SINCERELY – THE 2015 FESTIVAL HAS BENEFITED FROM YOUR EFFORTS

 Academic Bursary Award

At a recent meeting Eric Mock the Provincial Grand Master of the Province of West Wales accompanied by Stephen Hookey the Provincial Grand Secretary presented an academic bursary award to Sandra Beckwith. Sandra who lives in the Bynea area of Llanelli received the cheque for £1,500 in recognition of her dedication and commitment to achieving a BA (Hons) in Management at Coleg Sir Gar Carmarthen. Sandra who left school at 16 has shown tremendous determination and courage to return to the challenges of Higher Education after a gap of over 20 years. Her employer Tesco at Fforest Fach have supported throughout this period by not only allowing her time to follow her studies but have also widened her experience of their organisation to aid her understanding of the techniques of management. We wish Sandra success in her final exams and hope that her hard work will enable her career to flourish.

Peterwell Dedication http://www.westwalesmason.com/default.asp?pid=222&nid=79 By Emyr Davies

Saturday afternoon on the 20th February 2010 will remain vivid in the minds of the Brethren of Peterwell Lodge No 4713 for many, many years to come.  After a long 85 years they now have their own Masonic Hall.  They have worked incredibly hard to raise the funds to build this structure.  Our hats should be raised to them.

The Masonic Hall, Lampeter– has a very pleasant ring to it.  It has been a very long time coming, 85 years in all…  Dedication in March 1925 with 19 founder members, Peterwell Lodge has had many homes, often referred to by brethren of the Province as the nomadic lodge.  Its first home was in Lampeter College using the West Lecture

Room in the Canterbury Building, meeting six times a year coinciding with the college vacations, and holding the Festive Boards at the college dining hall.  This arrangement was enjoyed up until 1939, then war broke out and the Canterbury Buildings were taken over by Wycliffe School, which had been evacuated from

Gloucester.  The Lodge eventually found a suitable room at Bryn Road School holding their first meeting on Friday 15th December 1939.  Thursday, the regular day for the Lodge was changed to Friday, as this was the only date available to them by the school.  Due to food rationing and difficulties with outside catering during the war years, members had to forgo the Festive Board, yet Lodge meetings were well attended.  On 29th September 1945, a dispensation was granted to the Brethren of Peterwell Lodge to hold their meetings at Shiloh Chapel Vestry.  The Festive Board was held at the Black Lion and later the Castle Hotel.  In 1989, after spending 44 years at Shiloh Vestry, the Lodge was asked to leave the premises due to the anti Masonic felling prevailing within the Methodist Church at that time.  As a result Peterwell Lodge moved to Aeron Lodge, Aberaeron in November 1989.

However, there was always a yearning amongst most of the Brethren to return to Lampeter, so that when a suitable room became available at the Black Lion Hotel, the move was made back to Lampeter on the 20th February 1997.  The move back to Lampeter was short lived and Peterwell was once again thankful for the generosity and hospitality of the Brethren of Aeron Lodge and on 20th May 1999 a move was made back to Aberaeron until May 2005.  Lampeter still pulled on the heartstrings of the members of Peterwell Lodge, and when a room became available at the College, the opportunity to move back to our original home was too good to miss.  On September 15th 2005 the first meeting was held.  An occurrence of significant importance happened in 2006 when Peterwell Lodge bought the British Legion Hall in Lampeter.  This was demolished and the foundation stone was well and truly laid in August 2008 by our senior Past Master, W. Bro. Vincent Evans.

W. Bro. John Evans of Britannia Lodge, Sheffield, became the first Master and he brought with him the Sheffield workings, which Peterwell adopted.  Ceredigion County Council gave a substantial grant, which enabled completion of the building project sooner than envisaged.  In return for their generosity many local organisations can take advantage of the facilities offered by the new hall, and that will bring together the people of the area and Freemasonry closer together.

Peterwell's New Home http://www.westwalesmason.com/default.asp?pid=222&nid=78 By Richard Mathers

Wednesday 16 December 2009 marked yet another milestone in the history of Peterwell Lodge No 4713, when the Brethren of the Lodge were joined by the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro Eric Mock, the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, VW Bro Tom Evans and the Assistant Provincial Grand Master W Bro Brian Hilling together with Selwyn Walter the Mayor of Lampeter and Ivor Williams the Chairman of Ceredigion County Council in the brand new Peterwell Lodge Masonic Hall, Bridge Street, Lampeter.

This being the first permanent home for the Lodge since it was established by warrant in 1925.  After enjoying a splendid buffet lunch provided by the Ladies, Mr Williams unveiled a plaque to commemorate the donation of £20,000 made by Ceredigion County Council to the building fund, and then inspected the new Hall and Temple. The Hall contains cooking and toilet facilities, and will be made available to other organisations and individuals in the Town.

£30,000 IN RELIEF FOR HAITI EARTHQUAKE http://www.westwalesmason.com/default.asp?pid=222&nid=68 Following the devastating earthquake which took place in Haiti on Tuesday 12th January 2010, the President of The Freemasons’ Grand Charity has approved two emergency grants totalling £30,000. The funds have been issued to the British Red Cross and Plan.

The 7.3-magnitude quake, Haiti's worst in two centuries, struck at 1653 local time (2153 GMT) on Tuesday. The epicentre was within 10 miles of the centre of the densely-populated capital, where around one million people live, more than 50,000 people are feared dead.

The British Red Cross has been awarded £20,000 to assist with their relief efforts. Red Cross volunteers in Haiti are currently assisting the injured and supporting hospitals who do not have enough capacity to deal with this emergency. The most urgent needs at this time are search and rescue, field hospitals, emergency health, water purification, emergency shelter, logistics and telecommunications.

Plan has also been granted £10,000 in support of their efforts in dealing with the immediate aftermath of the disaster. Plan’s priorities are assisting children and their families and getting people into safe accommodation wherever possible, as well as working with survivors to help ease their psychological trauma.

Notes:

For further information regarding the Haiti earthquake relief grants please contact Siobhan McCarthy at The Freemasons’ Grand Charity on 020 7395 9385.

Province of West Wales Masonic Golf Society http://www.westwalesmason.com/default.asp?pid=222&nid=66 (Season 2009/10)
Captain W.Bro. D. Mike Bradney

(Joint Secretaries)
W Bro Mike Bradney. Tel .01646 683967—bradnem@tiscali.co.uk
W Bro Clive Pitten Tel..01646 684986—clivepitten@btinternet.com .

Brethren.
As you were made aware at the last Society Golf day, W. Bro. Reg Jenkins, who has been the Provincial Golf Society’s secretary for many years, indicated that he wished to take a rest from the secretary’s’ position.
The Provincial Grand master asked me if I would take on the Role.
W. Bro. Clive Pitten and myself have agreed to act as Joint secretaries, hopefully for the foreseeable future.

The society has Two Fine trophies, which are played for each year over Two Golf meetings, The Col. Trevor Kelway Trophy (Provincial Grand master’s Bowl) for the over-all combined total Points winner over the Two meetings and the W. Bro Sydney Hughes Cup – for the Runner up over the Two Days.

The provincial Grand Master is anxious to encourage as many Golfers within the Province to take part and is hopeful that numbers will increase to that of former days, when the numbers were up in the 60/70’s.
He has also expressed the wish that these Golf days, should not be regarded as a days for raising funds but days when our Province golfing members and Guests share each others company, in the game that we all enjoy.

It is also his intention to formally present these two trophies at the annual Provincial meeting in Carmarthen, each year.

As the Provincial meeting is in July each year, it makes more sense if our competition calculations are made with the September meeting being the First of the qualifiers and the following May meeting being the second
So our golfing year then runs from September to June each year.

The First presentation at the Provincial meeting, will now be made in July 2011 WITH this years September 3rd, meeting being the First qualifying meeting for the Trophies.

We will however still be holding this years May Golf Day. It is my hope that you will all support this day.

This will be held at Haverfordwest Golf Club on the 21st, May 2010.
With the usual arrangements being applied 18 holes golf followed by a Meal and Presentations
Cost is still £25.00 (Members £15.00)

The second meeting (and First qualifier for 2011 Championship) will be at the:-

Derllys Court Golf Club, (Bancyfelin) on Friday the 3rd September. 2010.
This is a glorious 18 hole Parkland Golf course and perhaps a change for many of us. Buggies are available (weather permitting)
There is also a Pro-shop attached.

Cost is £22.00 inclusive of Coffee/Bacon Roll on arrival, 18holes Golf followed by a meal and presentations.

(please put these dates on your Calendars)

Both Clive and myself would be grateful if those of you who have E-mail would contact us both at the above e-mail addresses, so that we can set up an electronic contact register for entries and indeed any suggestions which you feel are of use to the society.
Letters will be sent out to Lodge secretaries for information and to those members who have supported the society over the last few years and who are currently on the mailing list.
Details will also be in the West Wales Mason

We will publish the results on the provincial web as well as including them in the West Wales Mason publication.

Keep hitting them straight

Regards

Mike Bradney
Clive Pitten

Masons Assist The New Autistic And Special Learning Centre At Pembroke School http://www.westwalesmason.com/default.asp?pid=222&nid=55 The Brethren of Castlemartin Lodge 1748 had great pleasure in presenting a Cheque for £500 to the Autistic and Special Learning Centre at Pembroke School.

The Centre has been set up at Pembroke Bush School to provide specialist learning and study facilities for pupils with Autism from all over Pembrokeshire. Autism is a lifelong development disorder which affects the individual’s ability to communicate and interact socially.

Many of the young pupils are indeed very talented and some very gifted and it is hoped that this facility will enable them overcome this disorder and perhaps make their own way in their future life.

An appeal was received by Castlemartin Lodge from Mrs Margery Clark, who has set up an organisation to appeal for Funding to provide a sensory garden where these young people can study in a safe and quiet surrounding. The garden cost was estimated to be in the region of £10,000, and they had already raised some £2,300.
Castlemartin Lodge decided to donate £500 and also to request assistance from the Province for what they considered to be a very worthy appeal. The West Wales Grand Charity, which is the registered charity of the Province of West Wales, at their February 2009 Charity Appeals Committee Meeting felt that they should fund the shortfall fully and consequently agreed unanimously to provide £7,300.

In addition to this other Lodges have also agreed to make contributions over and above the monies already given, namely Narberth Lodge £250 and Loyal Welsh Lodge £500.

On a fine last day of March, a number of Castlemartin Masons, accompanied by their Worshipful Master, W.Bro. David Rees, and Charity Steward W.Bro. Mike Bradney, together with the Provincial Assistant Grand Master, W. Bro. Brian Hilling, attended the site of the proposed new garden to present the cheques.

Also in attendance was Mr Michael Brace, who through his endeavours had raised the £2700 already received, together with Mrs Clarke and Mrs Smith of the Fundraising Committee and pupils of the Centre.

Mrs Clare Bullock, the Centre Manager, welcomed everybody and thanked them for their generosity and gave a brief description of their work at the centre and how much the monies received were needed. She stated that it was hoped that the garden, which was so essential, would be completed and in use by September of this year. She hoped that she would be able to welcome us back at that time to see the finished article and to have a cup of tea to celebrate its opening.

Pictured are the Assistant Provincial Grand Master and Worshipful Master of Castlemartin Lodge presenting Cheques to the pupils of the centre.

Masonic Charities Association Appointment http://www.westwalesmason.com/default.asp?pid=222&nid=54 The Provincial Grand Master has appointed W. Bro Ryland James of St. Peter’s Lodge to be the Secretary & Treasurer to the Masonic Charities Association. This fills the vacancy created by the recent death of W Bro Keri Lewis.

W. Bro. Ryland will also become a Trustee of both the West Wales Grand Charity and the David & Elonwy Evans Masonic Trust by virtue of the office held, and will also take on the role of Festival Treasurer.

We congratulate W. Bro. Ryland on his appointment and thank him for taking these jobs on.

Provincial Website Launch http://www.westwalesmason.com/default.asp?pid=222&nid=34 Dear Brethren

Now that our new Web Site is up and running I wish to put on record my grateful thanks to Bro. Robbie Done for the time and effort he has put into its design. Not only has he produced a site of which the Province can be extremely proud but he has managed to get it launched two weeks ahead of schedule.

The success of this new venture now depends on us, the members of the Province. We must produce a continuing supply of stories and items of general interest, both to Members of the Fraternity and to the general public, thus ensuring that visits to our website are sufficiently informative so as to encourage our visitors to return on a regular basis.

I understand that this is only the first stage and Bro. Robbie sees improvements and updates being made on fairly regular basis over the coming weeks. At the same time he will continue to work on phases two and three. A part of these subsequent phases will be limited to the use of Members and will be of great benefit in the administration of the Province.

I am sure that you all look forward to watching the progress of this website with as much anticipation as I do.

Are you a Friend of the Albert Edward Prince of Wales Court? http://www.westwalesmason.com/default.asp?pid=222&nid=32 Built over 25 years ago and sited in the coastal resort of Porthcawl stands what can rightly be called a Masonic pride and joy. This is, of course, the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution Home, 'The Albert Edward Prince of Wales Court'.

This magnificent complex is one of 19 RMBI homes located throughout England and Wales and which in total have over 1100 residents.

Whilst the running of the home is very professionally handled by the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution, there is still a major contribution by the brethren of three Provinces

• West Wales
• South Wales
• Monmouthshire

Together they have formed an Association of Friends to support the staff and residents by working directly to provide the additional facilities, amenities, visits, trips and events to help create a comfortable, warm and friendly environment. In addition they work to provide transport for the residents.

Here in West Wales it is difficult to put in any physical help on a regular basis because of the distance involved. Every member of the Province can however show their support by becoming a Friend. Life membership costs just £10, so please – if you are not already a member – download the attached pdf file application, fill it in and pass it to your lodge Charity Steward with a cheque (payable to FAEPWC) for the fee. He will record the application and send it on.

Thank you.
