On Saturday June 19th 2010 the Province of West Wales held a very successful Grand Charity Event on the United Counties Showground in Carmarthen. The Event in the theme of Medieaval Fayre was generously sponsored by CK Foodstores .and Castell Howell Foods, and the Medieaval Banquet in the evening was sponsored by Fedwen Tentage who provided the excellent Marquee in which we dined royally.

There was lots to see and do at the Fayre and it is estimated that some 2,000 people attended and enjoyed the spectacular display by the Knights of Arkley demonstrating their skills at Jousting and the fighting skills of Nobleman. Along with the excellent Falconry display by Roger James of Black Mountain Falconry based in Abergavenny showing the versatility of their Birds of Prey. The crowd were further entertained by the skilful bowmen of the Wolfshead Bowmen who interacted with members of the audience.

Outside of the main arena there was plenty to see – The Collegiate of Knight Templar gave really exciting demonstrations of knight Templar fighting skills and an educational commentary of their weapons and the way they lived. The Wolfshead Bowmen had an archery range where people went to have a go at using the Longbow. The Market area proved very interesting and successful with Lodges and traders providing many interesting items that were being sold or raffled along with games to be enjoyed a fitting ambience for all.

Around the main arena were fair ground facilities for young children to enjoy and a food corner with Catering facilities by Iona Marks with lots of seats and tables, where people could sit and talk whist refreshing themselves.  Also in attendance were Air Ambulance Wales and St John Ambulance Service.

The Provincial Grand Master used this occasion to make a presentation to Air Ambulance Wale with a Cheque in the amount of £4,000. The Provincial Grand Master also announced that it was hoped that a grant would soon be approved by the Grand Charity to the St John Inshore Lifeboat Service to purchase a new Lifeboat stationed at Ferryside

For the adults who desired a refreshing drink, a visit to the ‘Crimson Moon’ Tavern was the thing to do there you could sample various meads, wines and ales, with mine hosts Sue & Iain Sewell and their staff in period costume providing some medieaval entertainment. There you could rest yourself on the outdoor tables and be entertained by “Blast from the Past” the very talented duo team of Minstrels Chris Green & Jude Rees who not only played all day long interacting with children and adults alike but also entertained us at the Banquet with music and strong man act, alternately watch Gerry the wandering Minstrel playing his penny whistle or enjoy the spectacle of mischievous people being locked in the stocks and pilloried with wet sponges.

To keep us all safe and properly behaved the Knights Templar in regalia were in attendance adding a colourful addition to the proceedings, marshalling the event and arresting any mischievous people. We are indeed indebted to Colin Fielder and Harry Randal and all Knight Templar who assisted them for all their hard work, and of course to the Provincial Prior Right Eminent Knight Graham Gubb for allowing us to have the Knight Templar’s appear in regalia whist receiving people at the entrance, directing the car park, and marshalling the event.

The Phenomenal success of this event was due to the co-operation of all the Lodges in the Province and their members who bought tickets in advance and the many people who contributed as sponsors or helpers.

We have already mentioned the main sponsors above and now particularly thank those other sponsors who paid for Banners to be hung around the arena or who advertised their businesses in the programme of the day. Without their support and generosity it would have been extremely difficult to have produced a successful event such as we did. There were many others who helped with the running of the event and I thank them all sincerely. I must however particularly mention – Iain and Sue Sewell for all their help and guidance from the start, it was Iain’s encouragement that brought the idea to fruition. Also Gareth Owen & Daryl Jenkins who spent the whole day spit roasting the very large Pig donated by Hefn Jones and the Lamb donated by Keith Davies & Alun Evans and of course Ian Jenkins who donated the Venison.

I must also thank our Provincial Grand Master Eric Mock for his support and confidence in allowing me the opportunity to organise this large event which was the first of its kind in this Province which involved opening the event out to the general public. Also W.Bro Brian Hilling  - Chairman of the Festival Committee for whom this event was organised, he encouraged and guided and gave us the responsibility of our actions, I am confident we did not let him down.

Lastly my sincere thanks the organising committee:-

Alan Bevan - Printing, Michael Cross - Market Area & Stalls, Ryland James - Treasurer, Elfan Bell - Public Relations, Glynog Davies – Commentator, Randal Isaacs - Compare at Banquet, John Phillips- Publicity, Mike Davies, John Everett and CAD representatives - Ticket Sales.

THANK YOU ALL MOST SINCERELY – THE 2015 FESTIVAL HAS BENEFITED FROM YOUR EFFORTS
